One idea, found everywhere

The Greeks built medicine around four humours moving through the body. Chinese medicine described the flow of qi and blood. Ayurveda mapped the movement of nutrients and energy through channels called srotas.

They disagreed on almost everything.

They agreed on this. Health depends on flow.

It's worth pausing on how strange that is. Separate civilisations, no contact, no shared data — and the same conclusion. Not because they were right about the details. They weren't. But because the underlying observation was real: a body where things stop moving is a body in trouble.

Where intuition became measurement

The metaphor held for millennia. The mechanism arrived in 1628, when the English physician William Harvey published De Motu Cordis and showed that blood doesn't seep or pool — it circulates, pumped by the heart around a closed loop and back again. It was the first time "flow" stopped being a philosophy and became an anatomy.

Everything since has been filling in that picture.

We now know blood delivers oxygen, nutrients, hormones and immune cells to every one of the body's tens of trillions of cells, and carries waste away from them. We also know the system isn't a passive set of pipes. The vessels themselves actively regulate flow, widening and narrowing in response to signals — and that this regulation tends to decline with age, which is part of why cardiovascular risk rises as we get older.

The ancients couldn't see any of that. But the instinct that pointed them at it was sound.

Why it still matters

The useful part of the old idea is that it's modifiable. Endothelial function — the vessels' ability to relax and let blood through — responds to exercise, diet and other lifestyle inputs. Flow isn't fixed at birth and it isn't purely a matter of fate.
